New Haven Hiking Club - Summer 2008 Schedule


STANDARD INFORMATION FOR ALL EVENTS

Class of Hike:  C = 1-5 miles  B = 5-9 miles  A = 9-13 miles   AA = 13+ miles

Bring bug repellent for hikes after mid-April. Bring water and rain gear. Bring lunch unless otherwise noted. Dogs not allowed unless leader states otherwise. If in doubt about any equipment, clothing or footwear necessary, or if weather is questionable, please check with leader.

The New Haven Hiking Club members, club officers, and activity leaders, assume no responsibility for persons hurt or lost, or for other related mishaps. Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult or must have special permission from the leader. Leaders have the right to cancel or change a hike or activity or to refuse attendance to anyone for any valid and apparent reason.


This is not a full list of club activities, only those open to the public. Members receive a quarterly e-mail schedule of all events.

Saturday July 5 3rd Annual New Milford Fireworks Paddle. Meet 7:00 PM at Young's Field in New Milford at 7:00 PM . Paddle starts at 7:00 PM with fireworks starting around 9:00PM. Those who wish to come earlier can enjoy the carnival and other events on the New Milford Town Green. Leader: Roberta Stalvey 860-210-1775 Rain date will be July 6th.

Sunday July 6 Thimble Islands Paddle 9:30 Meet at the Stony Creek Boat Launch, Branford. Leaders Bill & Janet Blaha . Call 203-453 4277 if you have any questions.

Sunday July 6 Hike 10:00 AM Class C 3-4 miles Bethany Farms Loop. Meet near bridge on Sanford Rd. close to intersection with 67 in Woodbridge. Leader Elizabeth Buckley 393-0141. Rain Cancels.

Sunday July 13 7-12 mi cl A or B MONADNOCK-ABOUT. Take advantage of long days to do a dramatic "above tree line" southern New Hampshire peak as a day trip. Mileage can vary due to many trail options. Call for time and meeting place. Steady rain cancels, but bring rain gear nevertheless. Car pool fee depends on number of passengers and gas cost. Park entrance fee $4. Friday, July 18 3 mi cl C FRIDAY NIGHT HIKE – OSBORNEDALE STATE PARK. Nicely varied terrain, woods and meadows. Meet 6:30 pm at park on Chatfield St. in Derby. Directions: From S: RT 8N to Exit 18. L at bottom of ramp, under RT 8, then L onto Chatfield ST. Park entrance is about 1000 ft on R. From N: RT 8S to Exit 17. L on Seymour AVE. 0.5 mi, L on Division ST. L onto Chatfield ST. MAP. Saturday July 19, 5 mile Tidal Marsh Paddle - Lord Cove, Old Lyme . See many species of rare and endangered plants and birds. Meet 10:00 AM at Town Landing on RT 156, Old Lyme. Directions: From Interstate 95, take exit 70 and drive north on Route 156 for about a half-mile. There is a town landing to the left, where you may launch your canoe or kayak, but parking is limited with a 3 hour maximum; after launching, one of your party will have to return your car to the park-and-ride lot just north of I-95 on the right (1/2 mile from site), and return on foot. Sunday August 3 11.7 mi cl A, TUNXIS TRAIL WHITE and YELLOW DOT. Harwinton. Johnnycake Mtn and Tory Den. Viewpoint. Lollypop. Not much lolly but a lot of pop. Call for time and meeting place. Friday September 5 and Saturday September 6 1 mi cl D STAR TREK MOONSHADOWS If sky is nearly overcast, the event is canceled for that night only. SEE: mountains cast shadows on our Moon, Jupiter, star clusters, stellar nurseries, our galaxy’s center. Please bring a working flashlight. The hike will explore a scale model of the Solar System. Leader has a 25-inch (mirror diameter) telescope . Dress warmer than you think. Arrive at 7:30 pm to see the Moon which soon sets. Stargaze until 10 pm or later if interested. Meeting place: 30 Birch Mill Road, Killingworth. From the crossing of routes 80 & 81, go north on 81 for 2.5 mi, L on Rt 148 for 1 mi, R onto Birch Mill for .2 mi, L onto driveway after bridge. House is .2mi farther. Travel time from New Haven is 50 minutes. If you come via Durham, Birch Mill Road is 6 miles along Rt. 148 from its junction with Rt. 79. Captain Jim Fullmer 860 663 3373.
